Keanu Santos

I want to tell you a story about a little boy . . . .

His name is Keanu. Keanu was born on the 25th May 2004. A beautiful healthy little boy, who brought nothing but joy and happiness to his mother.

On the 11 September 2004, Keanu suffered a serious injury. He was sleeping in his car chair in the car on the way home from some friends with his parents. While stopped at a red robot, a woman ploughed straight into the back of Keanu’s dad’s car. The impact was just too strong for this beautiful little boy and unfortunately he suffered a terrible injury.

Keanu was rushed to Entabeni Hospital where he was operated on immediately to drain the bleeding on his brain. He was placed onto life support and was in a coma. Keanu’s life changed from that day on. Keanu suffered a traumatic brain injury. The doctors gave him a 5% chance of survival. But being the strong little warrior he is, he pulled through. He came off the ventilator and out the coma. Everyday was a battle for him, but he kept fighting and never gave up. He really proved those doctors wrong.

Today Keanu is mentally and physically disabled. He is blind due to optic nerve damage and cannot walk, talk or sit. Keanu is a very happy little boy who spends his day playing when he’s not in therapy. When spoken to, he greets you with a very beautiful smile that can light up the room.

Little boy, my little man, light and love of my life,So precious, so gentle, you are my shelter, my shining light.You are totally dependant on me, on your own there is nothing you can do,But little man, this may surprise you, for I am just as dependant on you.

We seem to make each other stronger, just by us being together,Sometimes when I hold you, I wish that moment would last forever.At times when things get me down, I want to just sit with you for a while,So you can speak to me with your eyes, and run to me with your smile.

Moments we've spent together are some of the happiest I've ever had,I want to laugh with you when you are happy, and cry with you when you are sad.I want us to lean on each other as we continue to grow together,Because the love I have for you, little man, is a love that will last forever.

Some people may see a mountain and think it's much too high to climb,But to you and I it's simply another hill, it's just a bit bigger this time.We have some challenges ahead of us, but together these challenges we'llget through,And I thank God everyday for this special gift, this special gift that is you.
