The Big Day finally arrives
I’ll tell you all about my big arrival!!I was born on the 20th of July in the year 2006. My Daddy's 27th Birthday! Wow what a present! I got to meet the 2 most Wonderful people in my world on my Daddy's Birthday!! I was born at 9:13 in the morning, guess what? Daddy was born at 9:08 in the morning!! Only 5 mins difference!
Mummy had been helping Daddy clean the house for visitors on the 19th of July and she stopped to have a little break at 3:30pm … There was nothing to indicate that I was ready to meet them until Mummies water broke during her break.
It took Mummy a little while to realise that I was coming, and when she did, she sent Daddy a text message to let him know. Then she started texting everybody to let them know that I was on my way. Daddy got a phone call from one of the visitors who was on his way over telling him that Mummies waters had broken as Daddy hadn’t yet checked his phone, he was a bit upset that Mummy hadn’t told him FIRST (she did, but he won’t believe her).
So Mummy called the Hospital and let them know that her waters had broken and they said to monitor how much I move and let them know in an hour (I was very comfortable where I was).
Mummy and Daddy’s visitor arrived just before the hour was up and Mummy hadn’t felt me move all day… Mummy rang the Hospital back to let them know and they told her to head in.
Mummy and Daddy weren’t ready for me to meet them and hadn’t packed the Hospital bags so were running around trying to make sure they packed everything!
Mummy and Daddy arrived at the Hospital at 5:10pm and Mummy was taken to an assessment room where the Nurse hooked Mummy up to a Machine (CTG) to hear my heart beat and monitor when I move as well as when Mummy had contractions.
The nurse was going to send us all home, but she wanted to make sure I moved first. It was 6pm and Daddy went down to get some food and brought a Banana Paddle Pop for Mummy. It was yummy and oh so cold. That’s when I had to give a couple of kicks, it woke me up!
The Nurse had left for a little while and then Mummy’s contractions started to get a bit more painful, but Mummy didn’t know that she was having contractions – she thought she just had back ache. It was hard for Mummy to lie down and she couldn’t sit down as it hurt her back too much. She ended up pacing the assessment room until the nurse came back and started timing Mummy’s contractions.
By 7pm Mummy’s contractions were getting a bit too much for her to handle with just pacing so Mummy asked the nurse for something to help ease the “back ache” and the Nurse was going to put Mummy in the Antenatal Ward with some Panadol. Mummy requested something a little stronger as she was finding it hard to pace as well now. The nurse then offered for Mummy to go to the delivery suite and use some gas to help relieve the pain.
Mummy had been using the gas to help ease the pain for about an hour and a half (not properly may I add) when the nurse came back to see if I really was getting ready to meet them. Mummy was 4cms dilated at her first internal exam. That was when the nurse showed Mummy how to use the gas properly. It was good.
The nurse came in and out checking on Mummy and her progress, and then checking on my heartbeat and my movements. All of Mummy’s contractions were in her lower back, not one was at the front of her belly like she was told they would be.
At 11:30pm the gas didn’t seem to be helping Mummy all that much anymore so Daddy convinced Mummy to ask for some stronger pain relief. Mummy was given some morphine to help with the pain at 11:40pm. At Midnight the morphine started to work and Mummy wished Daddy a Happy Birthday.
Daddy had covered up the clock so that Mummy couldn’t keep checking the time. After a few hours with the morphine and Mummy falling asleep during contractions, Mummy had another internal (there more done but we don’t know how far or what time as Daddy covered the clock) and she was 9cm dilated. The nurse seemed a little bit unsure about this and requested that Mummy be put on some Syntocin to and help that last cm along so that Mummy was ready to deliver me. The nurse checked Mummy over a few hours later and we were still not ready to meet each other… The nurse had requested that Mummy be given an epidural to try another way of speeding things up. Daddy had thought about it for a little while and then agreed to the epidural. Mummy fell asleep again while they gave her the epidural.
A few more hours passed and the nurse was continually checking on us. Around 8:30am a team of medical professionals entered the room and advised that they thought Mummy had been in labour for too long and were concerned that she hadn’t yet reached 10cms dilation. They said they would take her to theatre and see how the progress was and then decide if I was to be delivered via a forceps delivery or via a caesarean section. Daddy advised them that Mummy and Daddy both agreed that they didn’t want Mummy to have an episiotomy and if the forceps delivery was going to increase the chances of that happening then they would prefer to have a caesarean done.
The doctor and nurses took Mummy to theatre and examined her and the situation and advised Mummy that they were going to do a caesarean to deliver me. They prepped Mummy for the surgery and then let Daddy come in as well. Mummy went into shock and had the shivers before she was given the 2nd epidural. Mummy could feel the nurses pushing gently on her tummy and Mummy asked why they were pushing on her tummy… It was because they had to get me out!!
After I was delivered at 9:13am, I was wrapped in a blanket after being cleaned up and the nurse put me on the table above Mummy’s head with Daddy holding onto me so that we could say “Hi” to each other. After about 5 mins the nurse took me to be weighed and measured and have my birth tests done. Daddy was close behind her.
I didn’t get to see Mummy for 3 hours after we said “Hi” to each other and I was getting rather hungry so Daddy had to organise (forcefully) with the nurses to get some food for me (I’m told I should have eaten within an hour of being born, not 3 hours). I was fed by Daddy then about 45 minutes to 1 hour later Mummy came up to our room.
Mummy said that they were holding her for observations because her blood pressure was really high, she was told that it had reached 180/110 and they were quite worried about her.
Thankfully it came back down, even if it was 3 hours later, I still got to spend my first night with both Mummy and Daddy!
I promised I would go easy on Mummy and I did. Mummy says she can handle labour again, she just hopes that if she goes through it again that she can dilate the full 10cms.
Thankyou for reading my story!
